The AIDS Legal Council provides legal assistance in cases where an individual’s HIV status, real or perceived, is the cause of his or her legal difficulties. We assist clients with discrimination cases, insurance disputes, return-to-work questions and confidentiality issues. We help those who come to us because they are too ill to work and need assistance applying for public benefits. We provide legal help to immigrants with HIV who want to normalize their status in the United States. And we help clients who need to write wills, powers of attorney or guardianships to guarantee that their loved ones will be cared for in case of serious illness or death. The AIDS Legal Council of Chicago advocates fair treatment for persons with HIV, voluntary and informed HIV testing, and expanded access to programs that enable clients to meet their health and living needs. ALCC works with its partners to educate policymakers about the rights of people with HIV and press for changes that will facilitate their access to vital care and services. ALCC litigates cases and files “friend of the court” briefs on issues impacting people with HIV and their service providers. In addition to providing legal counsel and representation to clients in need, the AIDS Legal Council of Chicago offers training and educational programs to help protect the rights of persons with HIV. ALCC is the primary source in Illinois for information on HIV-related legal issues and conducts more than 75 trainings annually on topics ranging from testing and confidentiality to estate planning and immigration.
