The mission of the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance (the Alliance) is to promote safety, support and healthy development for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth, in Illinois schools and communities, through advocacy, education, youth organizing and research.

The Illinois Safe Schools Alliance envisions a world in which youth develop to their fullest potential, learning in safe and nurturing schools, living in communities that accept and honor differences, where everyone has the freedom to express their sexual orientation and gender identity.

The goals of the Alliance are:

1) Public Education: To educate and involve schools, community organizations, parents, public officials, youth and the general public in Illinois, regarding sexual orientation and gender identity issues and the needs of LGBTQ youth in schools; 2) Youth Organizing: To engage youth across the state of Illinois to become leaders in the LGBTQ safe schools movement and be agents of change in their own schools and communities; 3) Policy and Advocacy: To conduct advocacy activities that will result in the inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity issues in the programs and policies that support the safety and well-being of youth.

Overview

The Illinois Safe Schools Alliance is currently seeking both programming and policy support interns. The job descriptions for the internship position(s) will be designed/solidified based on student(s) interests and skill sets. Additional information below.

Convening young people from all over the state, the Alliance creates a forum for students to inform, participate in and lead the Illinois LGBTQ safe schools movement. From Youth Leadership Summits, to Day of Silence/Night of Noise activities, to Gay-Straight Alliance networks—young people are working together to ensure the safety of LGBTQ youth and their allies in Illinois schools and communities.

For the last three years the Illinois safe Schools Alliance has hosted a 4-day sleep-a-way Youth Leadership Action Camp for young people throughout the state of Illinois to come together in order to discuss those issues most pertinent to them and learn from one another how best to advocate for change within their school and home communities.

Potential Internship Responsibilities:
  • Working with schools, students, and program staff to develop gender inclusive policies in schools
  • Partnering with students to facilitate community outreach initiatives
  • Supporting outreach, recruitment, and registration for Youth Leadership Action Camp
  • Curating educational programming/content
  • Policy research
  • Facilitating workshops with students
