Founded in 1994, Rivendell Theatre Ensemble is an award winning, critically acclaimed professional theatre company committed to recognizing and cultivating the talents of women in theatre—from playwrights and actors to designers and managers. Rivendell’s productions explore the unique female perspectives of everyday stories in an intimate, salon environment. Over the past twenty years, Rivendell has grown to fill an important role in the Chicago theatre community as the only Equity theatre in Chicago committed to advancing the lives of women through theatre. Rivendell has become a leader in new play development, a major port for new writers, and today, offers a brick and mortar artistic home for women theater artists to develop their work.

Rivendell Theatre Ensemble’s internships are offered to undergraduate and graduate students as well as early career professionals who are actively pursuing professional theater, and offer a deep understanding of the skill and dedication required to be successful. Candidates must be self-confident and adaptable with excellent communication skills, possess a strong work ethic, be a team player, and work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment.


Interns at Rivendell Theatre Ensemble:

  • Are given training, duties and projects under the guidance of department managers
  • Have opportunities to interface with staff and visiting artistic professionals
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in the planning and presentation of mainstage rehearsals, shows, donor events, readings, and developmental workshops

Internship areas:

Production: Work directly with Artistic Director Tara Mallen and Business Manager Trisha Hooper on productions / projects (such as the current WOMEN AT WAR tour). Involves supporting the producer, handling AEA contracts / reporting, managing schedules, assisting with tech, load-in and load-out / strike, overseeing budgeting processes, managing the venue, box-office and front of house during productions, and participating in productions as backstage crew / production assistants.

Literary:  Work directly with Rivendell’s literary committee facilitating play readings, taking part in all new play development activities including the reading and cataloging of scripts.

Marketing & Communications: Support marketing and public relations projects and campaigns including direct mail, special invitations and events, show opening preparation, and assisting with email correspondence to our ensemble, production team, board of directors, and patrons.

Development: Work directly with Managing Director Jackie Banks-Mahlum to help execute development campaigns, manage special events, and assist in the researching of grant opportunities.
